Glorious Weddings!

bride and groom

Last month my daughter, Hannah, married her love, Mike. The day started with torrential rains but God cleared them away and gave us the most beautiful blue skies. And in His mercy, He even dried up the ground! It was stunning!

The day was simply glorious and filled with joy. Hannah was beyond beautiful, and Mike was so handsome. They were both beaming throughout the day.

I love love. I am so drawn to a good love story and want everyone to experience a true love. I have tried to be a matchmaker, but my success rate in terrible. Nonetheless, I’m always curious to see what draws people together and who has chemistry and who doesn’t. It’s fascinating to me.

Do you know that the Bible speaks about our relationship with God in love story terms? God Almighty is even called our Husband! Let’s look at a few passages that talk about this…

For your husband is your Maker,

Whose name is the LORD of hosts;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,

Who is called the God of all the earth.

Isaiah 54:5

This verse is specifically talking to the nation of Israel and reminding them of whose they are. Look at the terms used to describe God:

Husband: They are united to Him, and He is committed to them.

Maker: Their connection to God goes all the way back to their creation. He was intimately involved in creating them…and creating them for Himself.

The LORD of hosts: This term talks about Yahweh (LORD) having an army that He rules over. While this might seem strange to add this term in conversation about God being a Husband, the Israelites would have felt comfort in the protection that God provided in this way.

Redeemer: A Redeemer is one who pays off a debt to buy something or someone back. Think of a car that’s been repossessed or a ransom paid to release someone who’s been kidnapped. There is a cost to the Redeemer, and the one redeemed is set free.

Holy One of Israel: To be holy is to be set apart, sacred.

God of all the earth: The God of Israel is over all; He is Supreme, and no part of the earth is beyond His rule and reign.

What beautiful imagery is used in describing God as Husband: committed, intimate, protective, sacrificial, sacred, and powerful.

Sadly, the Israelites were not faithful to this Faithful God, and He decided to illustrate that devastating fact through His prophet Hosea when He called Hosea to marry a prostitute. Repeatedly, she left Hosea and repeatedly he brought her back, just as Israel had abandoned God and God had restored them. Read the entire book of Hosea to see God’s heart to remind His people that He is their God, and they are to have no other.

In the New Testament, the imagery continues with Jesus being the Bridegroom and the Church being the bride. Steeped in rich Jewish tradition, Jesus makes the ultimate sacrifice to Redeem His Bride (He paid the Bride price—John 3:16) before He heads back to His Father’s house to prepare His home for her (John 14:1-2). He will return for His Bride (John 14:3) and enjoy a joyous celebration at the wedding (Revelation 19:6-9).

Do you know who will prepare the meal for the wedding reception of Jesus and the Church?

God, Himself!

On this mountain, the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.

Isaiah 25:6

Good wine, great meat.

And God Almighty will prepare it for us! I can’t wait to taste it!

In even more amazing news, Isaiah 25:8-9 tells us:

He will swallow up death forever;

And the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces,

And the reproach of His people He will take away from all the earth,

For the LORD has spoken.

It will be said on that day,

“Behold this is our God;

We have waited for him, that He might save us.

This is the LORD: we have waited for Him;

Let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

Isaiah 25:8-9

No more death.

No more tears.

Gladness and joy forever in the presence of the LORD.

What a wedding celebration that will be!
