You’re probably wondering, “What in the world is she talking about? The Donald’s hair is strikingly horrible. Is this actually a political post?” Good questions. First, I assure you that although I have quite a few political opinions, this is not a political rant—neither in favor of nor against Donald Trump—and I agree…his hair needs some help. BUT I had a realization a few years back that has stuck with me…and it has to do with Donald’s hair and this realization came long before he became a presidential candidate. In fact, I’d even venture to say that his hair holds (in addition to a lot of hairspray) a principle that we should all follow.
Several years back I decided to memorize Colossians 3:1-4.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
I’m sure you’re even more confused, but hang with me.
Paul tells the fine people at Colossae to set their hearts and their minds on things above. As I began meditating on this concept, I pondered what it meant to “set” your mind on something.
Set.
Set.
The first picture that came to my mind was of an old lady who goes to her hair salon once a week to get her hair washed and “set” for the week. You know what I’m talking about, right? She gets her coiffure done just right, and then she just has to use her hair pick to fluff it each day.
Naturally this led me to think about other people whose hair is “set” and You-Know-Who came to mind. The Donald. And you know that his hair is set. You’ve probably even seen the picture where a wind gust caught his hair and it stood straight up. And when the wind died down, his hair went right back to where it had been before.
BOOM!
That’s EXACTLY what Paul means in Colossians. When our minds are distracted by the things of the world—a little wind gust—our mind follows, but if our minds are set on things above, our thoughts will quickly return to the things of God.
Sounds nice, but how does this work?
Well, if we are minding our minds, we will be training ourselves to think on godly things. When we find ourselves wandering into worrisome thoughts or lustful thoughts or mean thoughts, we will catch ourselves and return our mind to wholesome, godly thoughts…thoughts from above.
When we find ourselves starting to worry about our finances, we will remember that the God we serve calls Himself Jehovah Jireh, the God Who Provides, and we will cling to that truth and find rest. When we find ourselves being lustful, we will remember to flee youthful lusts and pursue purity. When we find ourselves wishing revenge, we will remind ourselves of God’s power to exact justice and mercy and His call on us to live peaceably.
Is this easy? No.
Is it worth it? Yes!
It takes work for Mr. Trump to achieve his look. But that hair is going nowhere.
It will take work for us as well, but I’m confident that we can have minds that are as set as The Donald’s hair!

Hi Sarah, You are definitely a “Wordsmith”! Keep it up– and send The Donald a copy of your words if you can find his address. He needs to know how much his hair has inspired you to “set your mind on things above”.
Your ability with words no doubt came from God but also from your Grandfather Hadden skipping me along the way– as Red Skelton once said, “I’m a man of few words because I don’t know many words.”
Love Ya a Bunch!
Dad
Thanks, Dad! I wonder if Donald would take my comments well?!!
I love the word pictures to reinforce God’s word. Helps to re-set my mind on things above–once I shift my mind’s eye from the Donald’s hairdo.
Yes, even The Donald’s hair can distract us from things above. 🙂
Last weekend I observed an older woman getting her hair “set” – and I like the word picture you’ve used. It’s “sticky” – like Donald’s hair 🙂
Great as always, Sarah!!!
Haha! Thanks, Denise!
Well said, Sarah!!! God has blessed you with a gift that I am glad you are using for His glory!
And…you know I HAVE to say it…I find a little trouble relating to this “hair” thing!!!
Thanks so much, Rich! You’re too funny!!
